HealthDay News — Patients may begin to regain weight immediately after completing a weight management program, according to a study published recently in Obesity.

Kathryn M. Ross, PhD, from the University of Florida in Gainesville, and colleagues sought to characterize the pattern of weight loss and regain among 75 adults. Study participants self-weighed daily using "smart" scales over the course of a 12-week, Internet-based weight loss program and for an additional 9 months following the intervention.

The researchers identified a 3-phase pattern. Initially, participants lost weight at a mean rate of −0.46 kg/week. They began to regain 0.07 kg/week after 77.66 days. At 222.55 days, the rate of regain decreased slightly to 0.06 kg/week.

"In contrast to the hypothesized trajectory, results demonstrated that participants transitioned immediately from weight loss to regain (with no 'maintenance' period) and later to a slower rate of regain," the authors write.
