The ADA and the AHA launch a long-term awareness and education initiative for the prevention of deaths due to cardiovascular complications in patients with T2D.

The American Diabetes Association (ADA) and the American Heart Association (AHA) announced the launch of a long-term awareness and education initiative to reduce cardiovascular death and vascular complications in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D).

In a survey conducted in September 2018 by The Harris Poll on behalf of the ADA and AHA (N = 1050), only approximately half of respondents ≥45 years old with T2D recognized or discussed with a physician their elevated risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD).

Understanding this gap in knowledge, the AHA and ADA partnered to create Know Diabetes by Heart™, a program designed to educate and motivate patients with T2D using practical, stepwise support to minimize their risk for CVD. The initiative will also include quality improvement efforts for physician practices and hospitals and incorporate evidence-based guidelines for clinicians treating diabetes and CVD.

Patients with T2D will have access to an expert question and answer series regarding the link between diabetes, stroke, heart attacks, and CVD. The first occurrence of the series will be held November 14, 2018 at 2 PM Eastern Standard Time.

In addition, the initiative is offering a 12-month Living With Type 2 Diabetes Program, consisting of 6 free online courses for patients aimed at improving understanding of how to best manage T2D, including reducing the risk for cardiovascular complications.
