American Diabetes Association 2017: Preview

First look at research to be presented at ADA 2017.

The 77th annual Scientific Sessions of the American Diabetes Association (ADA) will take place from Friday, June 9 through Tuesday, June 13, 2017, in San Diego, California. Endocrinology Advisor will be reporting the latest news throughout the coming days.

This year, the ADA has categorized the Scientific Sessions into the following 9 themes: 

  • Acute and chronic complications
  • Behavioral medicine
  • Clinical nutrition, education, and exercise
  • Clinical diabetes and therapeutics
  • Epidemiology/genetics
  • Immunology/transplantation
  • Insulin action/molecular metabolism
  • Integrated physiology/obesity
  • Islet biology/insulin secretion

Special events include a networking reception (Friday, June 9 at 6:30 PM), a 5K Run/Walk to raise awareness about the importance of having a healthy lifestyle (Sunday, June 11 at 6:30 AM), wearing red to support ADA (Sunday, June 11, all day), and the Scientific Sessions Walking Challenge (Friday, June 9 through Monday, June 12). The challenge is to take 77,000 steps over the course of the meeting in honor of the ADA’s 77th anniversary.

In addition, on Saturday June 10, the Foot Care Interest Group, celebrating its 30th year, will hold a retrospective symposium on diabetic foot care treatments.

More day-by-day highlights include:

Friday — “Mini” symposia including a history of ADA guidelines and international guidelines on nutrition for preschool children with type 1 diabetes, among others. In the afternoon, more symposia will be presented, including hypoglycemia prediction models for risk stratification, mechanisms of insulin sensitivity and secretion, and the role of the intestinal immune system in metabolic disease, among others. Oral presentations will also take place.

Saturday — Symposia on the effects of diabetes in pregnancy on the developing brain, mechanistic links between cancer, obesity, and diabetes, and a joint ADA/EASD symposium on current diabetes therapies affecting the islet will be presented.

Sunday — Wear red and take in the following symposia: a joint ADA/JDRF symposium on progress toward creating an artificial pancreas, aging and the beta cell, exercise and diabetes complications, and a joint ADA/ASN symposium on the effects of new diabetic treatments on diabetic kidney disease, among others. 

Monday — The general poster sessions and moderated poster discussions, as well as case studies on the management of neuropathies, will take place in the afternoon.

Tuesday — Among a shorter line-up of symposia, there will also be an ADA President’s Oral Session.
