Program Description

This educational activity is designed to provide current information about the clinical value of TSH-receptor blocking antibodies for diagnosis and management of thyroid patients. The connection between TSH-receptor blocking and TSH-receptor stimulating antibodies in the management of hypo-thyroid and hyper-thyroid patients will be examined. Also discussed will be the recently updated guidelines from the American Thyroid Association and the American Association of Clinical Endocrinology for the treatment of autoimmune thyroid disease.

Intended Audience

This activity is intended for medical professionals who have a clinical interest in thyroid disorders as seen in the following medical specialties: endocrinology, primary care (internal medicine, family medicine, general practice), obstetrics/gynecology, cardiology, pediatrics, laboratory medicine, nuclear medicine, ophthalmology, neurology, psychiatry, and sleep medicine.

Educational Objectives

After completing the activity, the participant should be better able to:

  • Describe the overall TSH-receptor (TSH-R) antibody/receptor interaction and clinical implication.
  • Explain the clinical necessity to detect and differentiate TSH-receptor antibodies in pregnancy.
  • Identify patients with autoimmune thyroid disease, i.e. Graves’ disease (GD) and Hashimoto’s thyroiditis (HT) and the role of TSH-receptor antibodies (stimulating and blocking) in both diagnosis and management.
  • Define the role of the NP in identification and early diagnosis of hyper/hypothyroid patients exhibiting symptoms associated with GD or HT.
