1.00 / AMA PRA Category 1 CreditTM 1.00 / CE for Nurses 1.00 / CPEU for Registered Dietitians/Registered Dietetic Technicians
Provided by Haymarket Medical Education for CME.
Jointly provided by Global Education Group and Haymarket Medical Education for ANCC.
This activity is supported by an educational grant from Novo Nordisk.
Patient engagement is a key component of the successful management of any chronic condition, including obesity. Numerous studies have shown that patients who are “activated” experience better outcomes, are better able to manage their own disease, and incur lower care costs. Those patients also rate their care experience and clinicians more favorably. Unfortunately, keeping patients motivated and engaged over the long term is one of the greatest challenges faced by clinicians who treat obesity. While behavioral modification approaches have generally been effective in the short term, one of the main difficulties that healthcare providers face is reinforcing these strategies through regular patient-clinician interactions over the long term.
This CME activity will demonstrate practical interventions that clinicians can use to foster the engagement of the patient with obesity in the treatment plan and to maintain engagement over time. Shared decision-making and motivational interviewing strategies will be discussed, and a patient case example will be utilized to illustrate the application of knowledge to practice.
This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physician assistants, nurse practitioners, and dietitians.
At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be better able to:
Counsel overweight/obese patients on evidence-based lifestyle modifications for weight reduction
Implement shared decision-making and motivational interviewing strategies when treating patients with obesity
