Preliminary Diagnosis: Epididymitis

I. What imaging technique is first-line for this diagnosis?

Gray Scale and Color Doppler sonographic evaluation of the bilateral testicles and epididymi.

II. Describe the advantages and disadvantages of this technique for diagnosing epididymitis.

Advantages

  • Offers great portability.

  • Does not expose the patient to ionizing radiation.

  • Very quick to perform.

  • Able to detail both arterial and venous vascular structures and associated waveforms with exquisite detail.

Disadvantages

  • Sonographic imaging is somewhat operator dependent.

III. What are the contraindications for the first-line imaging technique?

No specific contraindications to sonographic imaging exist.

IV. What alternative imaging techniques are available?

No other alternative imaging techniques exist.
