Companion Medical announced the launch of the InPen system, an insulin injector pen with a smartphone app and bolus advisor, for the management of diabetes.

The InPen is compatible for use with Humalog U-100 (insulin lispro; Eli Lilly) and Novolog (insulin aspart [rDNA origin]; Novo Nordisk) 3.0mL insulin cartridges and single-use detachable and disposable needles in patients aged ≥12 years. The InPen monitors insulin doses, including priming, and transmits the data to the user's mobile device.

The system is able to calculate and recommend optimal insulin dose, track the timing of doses for 1 year, monitor insulin temperature, remind users to take insulin, display last dose and insulin-on-board, and create reports for the healthcare provider.

The accompanying mobile app can also synchronize glucose data from blood glucose meters and continuous glucose monitors via Apple Health. Currently, the app is compatible with iOS 10 and later; the version for Android devices is expected to launch in the second quarter of 2018.

The InPen system is available by prescription only.
