Coronary Artery Disease Linked to Growth Differentiation Factor 15 Levels

(HealthDay News) — Serum growth differentiation factor 15 (GDF-15) levels are associated with coronary artery disease (CAD), according to a study published in Cardiovascular Therapeutics.

Xia Wang, from the Nanjing Medical University in China, and colleagues examined serum GDF-15 levels and predictive values in patients with CAD. The enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was used to measure serum levels of GDF-15 in 105 patients with CAD and 96 healthy controls. CAD severity was assessed with Gensini scores; the correlations between serum GDF-15 levels and Gensini scores were assessed.

The researchers found that serum GDF-15 levels were significantly increased in patients with CAD vs the healthy group (P<.001). There was a positive correlation between GDF-15 and Gensini score (r=0.85; P<.001). The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve analysis result was 0.96 (P<.001); serum GDF-15 level had sensitivity and specificity of 80% and 91.7%, respectively, for predicting CAD.

"These data suggested that increased GDF-15 levels were positively associated with CAD, and GDF-15 might be a useful adjunct in discriminating CAD," the researchers wrote.
